Everton drew first blood in their Capital One Cup semi-final as they beat Manchester City at Goodison, and take a one-goal lead to the Etihad at the end of the month.

Ramiro Funes Mori opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish after Ross Barkley struck a powerful shot at City’s stand-in keeper Willy Caballero in which all he could do was palm it into the Argentinian’s path.

In the second half, Manchester City got back into the game through Jesus Navas, after the powerhouses broke from an Everton corner. The Spaniard was unmarked in the box and placed a left-footed shot past Joel Robles.

Only 5 minutes later, Everton went ahead once again, this time, Romelu Lukaku heading into the net from 6 yards off a terrific cross from Gareth Barry.

The second leg is due to be played on Wednesday 27th January.
