Roberto Martinez looks to tie the Costa-Rican down until 2019, with the player himself expressing his desire to stay at the club past his current contract which expires in the summer.
The left-back has played in the last three Everton games against Carlisle, Newcastle and Stoke City while impressing his manager along the way. Oviedo has had to bide his time this season with a few knocks keeping him out of football earlier on in the season, with Brendan Galloway filling in for the injured Leighton Baines.
Now it looks as though Oviedo has made a claim that he should stay in the team, even with Baines now back to fitness. The defender will be looking to get more minutes under his belt and to stay in the team, with injuries halting his Everton career a significant amount since his transfer in 2012 from FC Copenhagen.
Speaking to www.nacion.com, Oviedo explained:
Now we have set the ideal time to negotiate a new contract; these games have helped me a lot to show more interest in me,
I hope to renew with them and thank them for the opportunity they are giving me and the trust they place in me. One has to be grateful in life; they have shown me patience. The coach and coaching staff have always helped me and I am grateful. I will sign with them if everything we have spoken is in the contract. I want a contract that’s convenient for both parties.
For me it is very important (to play with )regularity, also the economic side; for now everything is advanced and I (will) sign for three years.
Everton’s next game is against West Brom this coming Saturday, and Oviedo will be looking to retain his spot which could see him play behind new singing Oumar Niasse who has been tipped to make his Everton debut in front of the Goodison faithful.
