The 53-year-old has come into the club under totally different circumstances to Martinez’s entrance; a strong financial backing from Farhad Moshiri, an ambitious plan from the Iranian and a stadium move on the cards.
Although, changes have to be made if the club are to progress from two consecutive bottom half finishes, and these begin on the pitch.
After a horrible couple of seasons in the Premier League, it’s there for everyone to see – there are some real talents within the squad, but some are simply not good enough.
For me, the goalkeeper spot is the position with the most attention needed.
The goalkeeper spot has already been improved somewhat so far this summer, the arrival of Maarten Stekelenburg will add much-needed competition – although I wouldn’t expect him to be starting next season. With the arrival of Stekelenburg, formerly on loan under Koeman, coach Patrick Lodewijks has also joined, replacing Inaki Bergara who departed following Roberto Martinez’s sacking.
Stekelenburg, now 33-years-old, looks to be a good signing, even if he isn’t to be No.1. An experienced head and a player Koeman trusts, along with a minimal fee, it always seemed likely the transfer would happen.
The future of Spaniard Joel Robles is still up in the air, though. Primarily second in command to Tim Howard during his three years at Everton, he found himself as the favoured ‘keeper for the second half of last season – a long overdue decision made from Martinez.
Whilst, in my opinion, Robles performed well last season, the 26-year-old still has a lot of Evertonians undecided on his ability.
As they say: every good team has a good goalkeeper.
So, who could Koeman sign?
Asmir Begovic
The 29-year-old is said to be unhappy with his role at Chelsea; second to Thibaut Courtois, it’s unlikely the Bosnian will be getting regular first team football anytime soon.
With rumours of Antonio Conte looking at bringing in Diego Lopez, Begovic could see himself pushed further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Begovic could be a good signing, who would come with Premier League and a rich international experience which has seen him play 50 times for his country including in the World Cup.
With first team football on offer, Begovic would more than likely welcome a move to Goodison Park.
A fee of sub-£8million would likely be enough to bring in the former Stoke City No.1.
Jack Butland
Now at Begovic’s former club, Stoke City, Butland caught the eye of many last season after some outstanding performances.
The 23-year-old averaged a clean sheet once every three games last term in the league, whilst he was the third highest ranked goalkeeper by saves (102), despite missing the final seven games due to a Malleolar injury.
Butland’s rise has surprised most, after three years at Birmingham City and a string of loans in the lower leagues, he emerged as an unexpected replacement for the departing Begovic.
Nevertheless, Butland was regarded as a standout player last season, receiving plaudits and links to top clubs after a fine season.
Now tipped to take Joe Hart’s No.1 spot for England, Butland would be a great signing for Everton, even if he would come with a big price tag.
Bernd Leno
Highly-rated 24-year-old Bernd Leno could be a great alternative for Koeman.
Leno has seen himself heavily linked to Liverpool, Tottenham and Real Madrid over the past year, but a move to Everton could be his favoured, with the lure of first team football.
Having been a regular for Bayer Leverkusen for five years, Leno could see this summer as a chance for a new challenge, with his side unlikely to break into the top two with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund’s presence.
Unlike Begovic and Butland, Leno is inexperienced in terms of English football, although he has been heavily involved in club European tournaments.
Last season Leno appeared 33 times in the Bundesliga, in which he conceded 38 times.
Leno would likely come with a smaller fee than Butland, but with no Premier League experience and a year on the Stoke No.1. He would, however, also be a significant upgrade on Robles and Stekelenburg.
Fraser Forster
One of a few England internationals who have come back from Euro 2016 without any shame, Forster would be a great signing for Everton.
Koeman, a big fan of Forster, signed the 29-year-old from Celtic during his first summer with Southampton.
At 6’7″ Forster is the biggest on the list, and he certainly knows how to command his area, which Howard and Robles failed to do on many occasions last term.
Forster has been a first team regular since the 2009/10 season, which he spent on loan in League 1 with Norwich City, and has since grown into one of the top ‘keepers in England.
He did, however, find himself sidelined for a lot of last season, seeing him make his comeback during the new year. In his absence, Stekelenburg filled in.
The Saints’ No.1 holds Premier League experience, whilst performing fantastically in the Champions League with Celtic, the lure of Koeman could bring Forster to Goodison Park.
