Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has been heavily linked with a move to Everton this summer, and it certainly looks to be a plausible move for the Toffees.
The Iceland international has been in superb form for Swansea City this season and has cemented himself as the best player in their current crop of options.
Sigurdsson has always had a high reputation for being an impressive attacking midfielder but he’s really kicked on in the last 18 months with Swansea, leading to increased interest from elsewhere.
Ronald Koeman and Everton will be hoping to bolster the squad in the summer and the Dutchman will be hoping to add star quality to the ranks.
Sigurdsson is a player that most certainly stands out for the Swans and is a player that the Toffees are understandably keen to bring to Goodison Park in the near future.
Here are five reasons why he’d be a good signing.
Premier League experience
Sigurdsson has spent the last five years in the top flight for Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea respectively, and his performance levels haven’t dropped. He’s been consistently good at this level and knows exactly what the Premier League is about.
Game-changing ability
Sigurdsson has the capacity to turn a game on its head in a matter of moments. He’s deadly from distance and has a superb eye for a pass.
The perfect fit
Sigurdsson would slot in seamlessly in the number ten role at Everton if Ross Barkley leaves. He suits how Koeman likes his team to play, knows the nuances of the formation and would simply flourish.
A sign of intent
Although Sigurdsson isn’t one of the most coveted players in European football, it’d still be a big statement to the rest of the league. It’d show that Everton can cherry-pick players from the teams below them and build a force of their own, attracting them with the ambition and the future plans at the club.
Set-piece quality
One noticeable aspect of Sigurdsson’s game is his quality from dead-ball situations. He can produce moments of magic from free-kicks and has an excellent delivery from corners.
