The Argentine international hasn’t played for Ronald Koeman’s side since March after sustaining a season-ending injury whilst on international duty against Bolivia.
The 26-year old was expected to be fit to feature during pre-season but has suffered a set-back, and now faces a lengthy lay-off.
Koeman has already brought in Michael Keane this summer, but may now dip back into the transfer market in search of more cover at the back.
The Dutchman also has Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Mason Holgate to call upon. Koeman was reported to be interesting in signing now-Crystal Palace defender Jairo Riedewald last week in preparation for Funes Mori’s injury results, however the young Dutchman elected to link up with his former Ajax manager Frank de Boer.
