Everton have reportedly joined a plethora of top flight clubs in the race to sign Thomas Vermaelen from Barcelona.
According to a report from the Mirror today, the Toffees are the latest club to express an interest in landing the experienced Belgium international this month, with defensive reinforcements on Ronald Koeman’s mind.
West Brom have been touted with interest in Vermaelen for some time now, along with the likes of Watford and Crystal Palace, but it looks as though they will need to beat Everton to his signature if they are to give the former Arsenal man the escape route out of Barcelona that he needs to revitalise his career.
Vermaelen has been plagued by injuries in the last few years and despite joining Roma on loan last season, failed to get going in Italy because of his fitness.
The Belgian has played for Barca just 21 times since joining them in 2014, and a move back to the Premier League could be of interest to him this summer.
Ronald Koeman has Michael Keane, Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka in contention, but is understood to be keen on luring a central defender to Goodison Park before the window closes.
