Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen has confirmed that Everton made a late approach to sign him in the summer.

Speaking to news outlet DH in his homeland, the Barcelona man discussed how he failed to secure a move away from the Nou Camp near the end of the window.

The leaders told me that there were four central defenders. I had no choice but to stay.

Clubs tried until the last day, like Everton, but it was impossible. I have never been able to negotiate.

Vermaelen has not enjoyed his time with Barcelona since signing from Arsenal, and has suffered an injury-plagued recent few years.

Everton were keen to bolster their defensive ranks in the summer and Ronald Koeman was evidently looking towards a defender comfortable on the left – characteristics that suited Vermaelen.

However, Barcelona seemingly knocked back the Toffees’ approach to land the former Roma loanee, and were keen to keep him in order to provide defensive depth.

However, Vermaelen remains to seldom play for the club, and it looks as though he’ll be keen to explore his options when the January transfer window comes around in a few months.
