Vermaelen still open to Everton move
Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has been talking to the Spanish media over his personal future, and it looks like a move to Everton in January is firmly in his sights, SportWitness report.
Despite the Spanish giants telling the Belgian international in the summer he ‘needed’ to stay, it looks like a move away from the Nou Camp in January is very likely, with Barca looking to cut their wage bill.
There were reports that the Toffees were interested in bringing the defender to Goodison Park over the summer, however, Barcelona were adamant they needed four centre-backs and a move never materialised.
The board told me they needed four centre-backs. I didn’t have a choice but to stay. Clubs tried until the very last day, like Everton, but it was impossible. I wasn’t even able to negotiate.
With the La Liga leaders recently announcing the club’s finances, it has shown that 84% of income is going on players wages, something that is extremely high, and with more potential incomings ahead, it looks like Barca will be selling some fringe players in the upcoming window, such as Vermaelen who hasn’t featured for the club so far, this campaign.
