Everton set to hand defender a contract amid Leeds interest

Everton are set to offer young defender Matthew Pennington a new deal at Goodison, as Leeds look to sign him on a permanent contract, according to Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The 23-year-old centre-back has made 23 appearances on loan at Leeds this season, receiving mixed reviews from the Elland Road faithful in their 13th placed Championship finish.

However, the Everton man has been blighted with injury problems, which have prevented him getting going in a white shirt this season.

Pennington graduated from the Everton academy in 2013 and has made nine first-team appearances for the Toffees, as well as scoring in the derby at Anfield.

With his contract up in the summer, Everton may just be protecting themselves from losing Pennington on a free transfer, and they may look to sell or loan him out again.

If Leeds are asked to pay a hefty sum for the English defender, they may decide to look elsewhere.
