Everton left-back Leighton Baines has been full of praise for caretaker manager David Unsworth.
The experienced defender spoke about Unsworth’s impact for ESPN, and was reflecting on his side’s dramatic 3-2 win over Watford with great pride, expressing his delight for Unsworth.
To get the three points was huge for us, and it made it extra special that we were able to get a win for David Unsworth. Unsy has been top drawer since taking over as caretaker manager. I have loved the training sessions he has put on, and the way he has conducted himself.
He is a true Evertonian, with a deep passion for the club and his team talk before the Watford game was special.
We were bitterly disappointed not to have achieved better results from his first three games in charge, so to finally get that win on the board for him felt great. It was the least he deserved.
Baines netted in the final minutes of the match to secure what was an important and much-needed victory for the Toffees, who have endured a treacherous start to the season.
It has been a torrid 2017/18 season so far for Everton. Things have not picked up despite them replacing Ronald Koeman, and they are still in a dangerous position.
Everton are out of the Europa League with two games still to play, and are also out of the Carabao Cup following a defeat to Chelsea. They sit in 15th place on the Premier League table.
Baines and Unsworth alike will hope that the win against Watford prior to the international break will be the catalyst for a change in fortunes on Merseyside.
