With Chelsea’s transfer ban having been upheld by FIFA, Everton’s chances to sign Kurt Zouma on a permanent deal have been significantly decreased.
The Toffees had hoped that FIFA would temporarily freeze the two-year transfer ban, enabling Chelsea to make signings in the summer and subsequently sanction sales of fringe players to lower their wage bill.
However, with the ban, Chelsea are unlikely to sell their man, which means Everton will need to scour the transfer market for a new option.
With Phil Jagielka nearing the end of his career, Everton will be in need of a fourth centre-back next season, to go along with Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate.
Here are four potential centre-back options that we feel Everton should and/or could target in the summer:
Everton have been frequently linked with a move for the Newcastle captain in recent transfer windows, and the 25-year old would represent a solid signing for both the future and the present.
Tarkowski would be the second defensive signing from Burnley in as many years, and would reunite with Michael Keane at Goodison Park.
When Burnley sold Keane, Tarkowski grew into his role as the former’s replacement, impressing in the process. His form also earned him a deserved England call-up, and he could look to move on to a better project this summer.
Another England defender who has quietly impressed this season, Dunk would be a smart signing.
Dunk has been at the heart of all of Brighton’s recent successes, and he has earned plaudits that represent the impact he has had.
West Ham beat Everton to Issa Diop’s signature last summer, but there is no reason Everton couldn’t go in for him again.
The Frenchman has done well this season, with Jose Mourinho praising the scout who identified Diop’s talent earlier in the season.
He would be another who would represent a positive signing for the future and for the current.
