Everton that. Coming into this match with 3 clean sheets in a row against Chelsea, West Ham and Arsenal… you’d expect Everton to continue their solid form. But Everton laid an egg. With Wolves and Leicester losing, Everton had a chance to secure 7th place.
Fulham, on the other hand, lost 9 consecutive matches and only kept 2 clean sheets all season. This should have been an easy match for Everton.
Everton just had no answers to Fulham. They could not break Fulham down on the attack and looked sluggish on defense.
This tends to be the case with Everton. They struggle to defeat the middle and bottom tier clubs while putting up a fight against the top. Everton needs more consistency moving forward. Marco Silva and Everton need to learn from this defeat and not let it happen next season if they want to challenge for a spot in the Top 6.
Lets take a look at 4 findings from the Fulham and Everton match.
Mitrovic Bullied The Back Line
Marco Silva decided to start Jagielka after a strong performance last match. But was it the best choice going up against Fulham’s Mitrovic?
Mitrovic absolutely bullied Jagielka and even Zouma all match long. Keane would have been a smarter choice to start and has been fantastic all season. Not sure why Jags retained his spot.
Mitrovic, on the other hand, looked like he might have been trying to impress Everton and maybe force a move there this summer? Who knows, but he looked strong.
Sigurdsson Anonymous Again
Unfortunately, Sigurdsson was a ghost on the pitch and offered nothing. You’d expect more from a record signing.
This should have been a match where Sigurdsson dominated. Gylfi scored 7 of his 12 goals this season against bottom side clubs.
But once again, questions emerge about Gylfi’s future in this team.
Everton had no answers to break down Fulham. Back passes and side passes were all Everton could muster. There were no driving passes forward to start an attack.
This was a shame since Everton were playing some fluid football coming into this match.
Bernard, Gylfi, Gomes and Richarlison didn’t offer much throughout this match. And when a chance opened up, DCL missed them.
Say Goodbye To 7th Place?
Everton did what Everton does. Both Wolves and Leicester City lost this weekend. Everton could have jumped to 7th place and hopefully land a spot in the Europa League.
If Everton do miss out on a European tour, they can look back at the defeats to Newcastle and Fulham as the reason why.
