Former Scotland manager and pundit Alex McLeish has offered his thoughts over where Everton will look to strengthen in the summer – claiming they will sign yet another midfielder.

The Toffees have bolstered in the middle of the park with the arrivals of the likes of James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan in the summer, boasting Tom Davies and Andre Gomes as other options in midfield available to Carlo Ancelotti.

However, McLeish feels that level of depth is not enough – tipping the Toffees to sign a ‘controller’ in a similar mould to that of Ruben Neves or Joao Moutinho at Wolves.

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish claimed:

“I think [Ancelotti will] probably be looking at midfield. They’ve got workaholics in central midfield but I think he’ll be looking for a controller.

“For instance, in the way Wolves have done with the Portuguese players, like Neves and Moutinho. He’s a great player as well. That could be an area that I would be thinking about.

“A kind of Steven Davis at Rangers, who takes the ball from defence and starts the build up. He just knows where to go on the pitch. I know he’s got Gylfi Sigurdsson in a number 10 role but I’m talking just a wee bit deeper.”

Separately, the same Football Insider report understands that Everton are preparing to spend significantly in the summer in order to strengthen despite the ongoing financial strain facing world football at the moment.

Everton are well-stocked in the middle of the park, so it is hard to see where a new addition would fit in without some departures being sanctioned first.

That could cause a handful of Everton players to sweat over their long-term futures at the club. The perpetually injured Jean-Phillipe Gbamin could be one unfortunate player jettisoned in an effort to reshuffle Ancelotti’s midfield.
