As Everton close in on the appointment of former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, Richard Keys has slammed the decision-making of Toffees chiefs.

Everton have been in the hunt for a new manager since the club agreed a compensation deal with Real Madrid to take Carlo Ancelotti back to the Bernabeu.

Having come close to appointing ex-Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, it now seems that Rafa Benitez is front-and-centre for the vacant Goodison Park job.

According to Sky Sports, Benitez was the Toffees’ top target last night following progressive talks.

He managed rivals Liverpool from 2004 to 2010, winning the FA Cup, Champions League and the Super Cup during his tenure at Anfield.

That connection to Everton’s arch-rivals was a particular sticking point for Keys, who took to Twitter to condemn Farhad Moshiri for a perceived lack of understanding of the Everton fanbase.

Appointing Benitez would certainly be a bitter pill to swallow for Evertonians and Keys’ claims are evident of the division an appointment will cause.

However, Benitez has previously spoken of his affinity with the wider city of Liverpool and how he counts Evertonians among his friends.

With proven success in delivering silverware, Benitez will be hoping that results speak for themselves if he is appointed.

If Everton see notable improvements under the Spanish tactician, any resentment would soon fade.
