Everton were said to have been ‘one of the most angry and vocal clubs’ during a meeting with the Premier League to explain the decision to approve the takeover of Newcastle United by a consortium led by the Saudi Arabian Government’s Public Investment Fund.
One top-flight executive had told Sportsmail that the disgust stems from the ‘green-eyed monster’ of envy and ‘self-interest’, with Newcastle’s owners promising significant investment in their pursuit of silverware following their acquisition of the club.
According to the source, ‘insiders’ have said that United, Spurs and Everton were the most vocal on the call as they opposed the increased competition for European footballing places – in particular, the Champions League.

Such an unsavoury reaction to the takeover is not a good look for Everton’s owners – but there is a clear positive to take from the news.
It is certainly a fine testament to Everton and their Champions League aspirations that their opposition to the takeover stems from increased competition.
Although there is a hotbed of discontent, clubs surely have to accept and get used to the new powerhouse at Newcastle now that the new owners are in place.
