The Toffees were also at risk of losing another one of their important players during that time to another Premier League side for a similar fee as Chelsea were reportedly keen on signing Anthony Gordon for £60m as well.
This move ultimately didn’t end up happening and Gordon has since shown how much of an important player he is for the club and Frank Lampard by starting all of their seven Premier League games this season.
While there has been some tension between the fans and the ownership of the club in recent times, one thing that Everton’s director of football, Kevin Thelwell, could do to get the support buzzing is by securing Gordon to a new deal at Goodison.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the club had opened talks with the Englishman over a potential new contract to keep him at Everton and to presumably shoo away any future interest in him.
Even though his current deal isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2025, this shows just how valued he is by the Toffees and how much they want to make sure he remains an Everton player for the foreseeable future.
As one of the six Everton players to feature in every league game so far this season, Gordon has more shots at goal (18) than any other player in Lampard’s ranks, showing how much of a deadly attacking figure he is.
The winger has also made more pressures (152) than any of his teammates, showcasing how useful he is without the ball as well.
Praised by Alan Shearer for his “fearless” attitude on the pitch, if Everton and Thelwell can seal the £10k-per-week attacker’s signature on a new contract as soon as possible, this will surely have lots of supporters jumping for joy.
