The latest Everton transfer update could spell ominous news for Jordan Pickford as the goalkeeper comes under increased scrutiny.

A transfer update from Football Insider has claimed that the Toffees could move for Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The Argentina international has served as the long-term deputy to first-choice shot-stopper Hugo Lloris at Spurs since he joined from Southampton three years ago.

Football Insider added that the Merseysiders are ‘expected to be active in the new year even though their budget is restricted after more heavy spending in the last window’.

Everton are reportedly set to ‘concentrate on the loan market and cheap deals’ in the January window – paving the way for Gazzaniga to possibly be signed as early as January.

The Toffees already signed Swedish international Robin Olsen on loan from Roma in the summer to provide immediate competition for Pickford. However, the latest reports seem to indicate that Gazzaniga may be a long-term option, especially if Olsen’s move is not made permanent at the end of the season.

That could cause Pickford’s brow to sweat.

Whilst Gazzaniga would probably not be a guaranteed starter, any significant investment in the goalkeeping department would not be merely for depth. Instead, it would be to provide an intense challenge for a starting berth between the sticks.

It should be noted that Jonas Lössl is still at Everton, meaning that the club have a backup option regardless of Olsen’s presence in the future. That adds a further hint that Pickford could be about to face a serious threat to his long-held first-choice position.

Amid a number of high-profile errors from the England international, expect the goalkeeping role to remain a source of activity in the Everton rumour mill for some time.
