# Arsenal passed on Ancelotti as they wanted head coach instead of manager

Arsenal’s decision to appoint a head coach instead of a traditional manager to replace Unai Emery may have led Carlo Ancelotti to Everton.

Many had assumed that with both the Toffees and the Gunners looking for a new boss this month, that the 60-year old Italian was more likely to end up at the Emirates Stadium than Goodison Park.

While nothing has been made official at either club just yet, it appears as though Arsenal will appoint Mikel Arteta to their vacant role while Ancelotti will join the Blues.

[According to Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11888958/mikel-arteta-talks-with-arsenal-at-sensitive-stage), this could primarily be down to the type of coach that Arsenal want at this point, with the London outfit preferring the more continental head coach approach.

Ancelotti, a traditional hands-on manager, may have been passed up on by the Arsenal board as he doesn’t fit their system, leaving Everton to make their move.

The Toffees also have a director of football, although Marco Silva worked in tandem with Marcel Brands, and Ancelotti would still be expected to have a considerable say in the club’s transfer business.

It is expected that Everton will announced the appointment of Ancelotti later this week, with the Italian likely to take charge against Burnley in his first game.

This makes plenty of sense because otherwise it would have been strange to consider why Arsenal would have passed up the chance to appoint such a decorated manager in favour of someone who is essentially a huge gamble.

Still, Everton will fortunately benefit from Arsenal’s stance, with Ancelotti likely to impose himself on the Blues’ talented but severely underperforming squad.
