# Ashley Williams bewildered by Everton under Rafa Benitez

Former [Everton](https://readeverton.com/2021/11/05/virals-everton-face-fresh-competition-in-race-for-iddrisu-baba/) defender Ashley Williams has admitted struggling to figure out the plan under [Rafa Benitez](https://readeverton.com/2021/11/05/frank-mcavennie-calls-for-patience-regarding-rafa-benitez/).

The 61-year-old Spaniard has endured his most taxing spell at the helm at Goodison Park in recent weeks as [injuries](https://www.evertonfc.com/teams/injuries-and-suspensions) and poor form take hold.

Having made a [bright start](https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/everton-rafa-benitez-david-moyes-intensity-resilience-1248220) to the season, the former Liverpool boss has come under scrutiny as results begin to nosedive.

Speaking to [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/59201120), Williams suggested that it was hard to fathom what the Toffees’ modus operandi is.

> When I watch the Hammers, I know exactly what they are going to do. They are tough to break down, with some really dangerous players on the counter-attack and they have quality in certain areas. In short, they have a plan. The same goes for every team that is in and around the top of the table, but not Everton. I don’t watch Benitez’s side and think ‘right if the plan comes off, they will win today’ because I am not even sure what that plan is. I also don’t think their squad is good enough, or big enough with as many options as the other teams above them probably do.

This comes just days after former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie [claimed](https://www.footballinsider247.com/pundit-tips-everton-to-make-big-benitez-decision-soon-amid-terrible-verdict/) it was ‘inevitable’ that the Everton hierarchy would lose patience with Benitez.

### READ EVERTON VERDICT

Ultimately it’s a results business and of late the [proof](https://www.evertonfc.com/results) has been relatively damning.

Benitez was always [fighting against the tide](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/12342325/rafael-benitez-everton-set-to-appoint-former-liverpool-manager-as-carlo-ancelottis-replacement) on the Blue half of Merseyside and any downturn in form was always likely to bring about questions of this nature.

It would appear that the Spaniard is at least going to get until [after the ongoing break](https://www.evertonfc.com/fixtures) to turn things around, both in terms of plan and results.
