# Bayern starlet Zirkzee admits he could have signed for Everton

Bayern Munich starlet Joshua Zirkzee has admitted that he could have joined Everton in 2017.

The 18-year old has burst onto the scene in Germany this season, making his debut for the Bavarians in December and scoring two goals in two games.

The young striker came on against Freiburg in the 89th minute and scored in additional time in their 3-1 win, while he again came off the bench three days later against Wolfsburg, being introduced in the 83rd minute where he would score Bayern’s opening goal in a 2-0 win.

The Dutch forward has now admitted that he could have moved to Goodison Park instead of the Allianz Arena in the summer of 2017, when he went on trial with the Toffees and was one of the club’s stand-out performers during the General CEE Under-19s Cup.

[As reported by the Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/breakthrough-bayern-munich-star-admits-17537002), Zirkzee told Voetbal International:

> Everton was a serious option for me.
>
> Ronald Koeman was coach, Romelu Lukaku left for Manchester United that summer and I got the feeling from Everton that there was a good chance I could really become something there.
>
> They even offered me a contract whilst I was on trial.
>
> After I first trained with Bayern, I knew that’s who I wanted to join. I told myself, let me do three sessions – then I’ll decide if I’m good enough.
>
> They told me I have the quality, but also that they wanted to work on my conditioning, among other things. They’ve been true to their word.
>
> I want to become *the* striker at Bayern – that’s always been my objective.

### Read Everton Verdict

I would assume that Zirkzee isn’t the first player to be in the position to weigh up an offer from Everton and an offer from a larger club, and with Everton not considered to be an elite team, it was hardly likely to be a difficult decision for him to make.

At this stage it is impossible to tell whether Everton have missed out too. Zirkzee has only just broken through into Hans-Dieter Flick’s side, and the 18-year old didn’t have a particularly impressive run in Bayern’s youth squads at the beginning of the season, scoring zero goals and assisting two in 14 3.Liga appearances ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joshua-zirkzee/profil/spieler/435648)).

If Everton hadn’t attempted to sign Zirkzee it would be a more prominent issue, but they club can’t do anything about being outdone by the German giants.
