# Cottee doubts DCL can deliver Everton enough goals – why his claim is fair

Former Everton forward Tony Cottee has claimed that he doubts Dominic Calvert-Lewin has what it takes to take the Toffees into the top six.

DCL has struggled to really get going this season, and has failed to score in all five of his appearances for Everton during the new campaign so far.

Alongside new signing Moise Kean, the Blues are largely reliant on a young strike force to fire them into the European places this season, and the club are demanding a certain level of consistency in front of goal.

While DCL constantly shows potential, and often demonstrates significant ability in holding up the ball and creating space, he spurns too many chances in front of goal.

Talking to talkSPORT ([via HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2019/09/11/tony-cottee-gives-honest-view-of-evertons-dominic-calvert-lewin/)) on Wednesday morning, Cottee, who scored 72 goals in 184 league appearances for Everton, claimed that while DCL shows promise he doubts that he has that something extra needed to realise the club’s ambitions. Cottee said:

> He’s a good player but I don’t know whether he’s going to get the goals to push the club into the top six.
>
> (Everton) have got to be more consistent, they can beat anyone on their day but they’re not consistent enough. They’ve got to be more consistent then they’ve got a really good chance of kicking on.

Is Cottee’s assessment of DCL fair?

### Read Everton Verdict

I’m a fan of what DCL has the ability to do for Everton, not what he is currently doing. It think he has potential to get the goals Everton need to propel themselves up the league table, but for whatever reason he isn’t doing it on the pitch.

Everton aren’t in a position where they can carry hangers-on, and if DCL doesn’t improve in front of goal soon he’ll have to be shifted. The Toffees need to focus their time and energy on players who are contributing to the war effort, so to speak, and currently the forward isn’t doing that.
