Moyes considering Grealish Everton role change ahead of Arsenal

Jack Grealish

David Moyes has revealed he is considering moving Jack Grealish into a more central role at Everton, a change which could also open the door for Tyrique George.

Grealish has predominantly operated from the left since returning to Everton, but Moyes is looking at different ways of using the England international as he considers his attacking options. Speaking before today’s Premier League trip to Arsenal, the Everton manager confirmed that playing Grealish further inside is firmly under consideration.

Moyes considers central Grealish role

Moyes described a more central position for Grealish as a “big consideration”, adding that the 31-year-old has the ability to operate in several different areas. Everton have already experimented with the idea. Moyes revealed Grealish was given a more central role during the Carabao Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers and stressed that it remains something he and his coaching staff are considering.

The most interesting consequence could concern George. The winger started the season encouragingly but has found opportunities more limited since Grealish arrived, with Moyes acknowledging that his progress had been affected by the increased competition. Moving Grealish inside would potentially create space for George to return on the flank, although Moyes did not indicate that he plans to make the change against Arsenal.

George waiting for Everton opportunity

Moyes spoke positively about George only last week, describing him as “knocking on the door” and highlighting his ability to play on either wing. The manager has since urged patience with George, Tyler Dibling and Hayden Hackney as they attempt to establish themselves, pointing to Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Joleon Lescott and Tim Cahill as examples of players who took time to become regulars during his first spell at Everton.

Grealish’s position adds another dimension to that picture. Rather than George simply having to displace one of Everton’s most experienced attacking players, Moyes is considering whether there is room for both in a different shape. It is also one of several tactical questions facing the Everton manager at the Emirates. We have looked at three selection decisions Moyes must make against Arsenal, including whether Hackney should be given another opportunity in midfield.

For now, a central Grealish remains an option rather than a confirmed change. Moyes’ comments nevertheless show it is one Everton have already tested and are continuing to consider.
