# Moyes faces familiar Jack Grealish challenge after Everton discipline issue

**David Moyes faces a familiar challenge with Jack Grealish after the winger was left out of Everton’s Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle United for a breach of club discipline.**

Grealish missed a training session without permission before Thursday’s game and was subsequently omitted from the squad. Moyes backed the club’s decision but declined to discuss the circumstances in detail, instead pointing to the standards expected of Everton players on and off the pitch.

## Moyes has faced similar challenge before

Writing in [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/), Daniel Taylor has drawn parallels with the situation Moyes inherited involving Wayne Rooney when he became Manchester United manager in 2013.

Rooney’s relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson had deteriorated towards the end of the previous season, and a move to Chelsea had been discussed. Taylor recalls Moyes challenging the striker over whether he still regarded himself as a top player and, after Rooney said he did, asking why Chelsea had offered only £25m for him.

Moyes ultimately kept Rooney at Old Trafford, and the striker responded with 17 Premier League goals that season. The circumstances surrounding Grealish are different, but the episode offers some insight into how Moyes has previously dealt with a senior player whose focus had come under scrutiny.

The Everton manager has been notably restrained this time. After Thursday’s 3-1 win, he said only that Grealish’s omission was a club decision which he supported, before praising the “really good values” within the squad. Reports also indicate Grealish has since returned to training.

[Everton](https://readeverton.com/) have not indicated that the incident marks the end of Grealish’s second loan spell, and Moyes has refused to reveal whether he will return for the Premier League match against Newcastle on Monday.

Grealish remains a popular figure among Everton supporters after an impressive start to his first loan spell was cut short by injury. His second season has been more difficult, however, and the latest episode leaves him needing to work his way back into Moyes’s plans.

More than a decade ago, Moyes challenged Rooney and received a response. How Grealish responds to Everton’s decision will now be watched just as closely.
