# Everton consider Arteta as Silva replacement

Everton would be interested in appointing former player Mikel Arteta as the club’s manager if Marco Silva is relieved of his duties, according to reports.

The Spaniard, who is currently Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, has seen his managerial stock rise considerably in the last few years.

Many have tipped the former Everton star to succeed Guardiola at City once he moves on, although others have instead name-checked Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the natural successor at the Etihad.

While Arteta has not technically managed a football club yet, Guardiola previously conceded that the 37-year had taken charge of Man City on a few occasions.

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast ([via the Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/former-rangers-midfielder-mikel-arteta-20860886)), Duncan Castles revealed Everton’s interest in their former midfielder, saying:

> There is a lot of interest from the Everton end in Mikel Arteta as a candidate should they need to make a change.
>
> This makes a lot of sense because Arteta’s status in the game is very high.
>
> He has not managed yet but he’s credited as an important part of Manchester City ‘s treble winning campaign last season as Pep Guardiola’s principle assistant. He was a strong candidate for the Arsenal job before they appointed Unai Emery.
>
> This is one to pay attention to and see how it develops.

Reacting to this news on Twitter, many Everton fans conceded that they would like to see Mikel Arteta return to Goodison Park, although most would like him to accrue managerial experience elsewhere first.

### Read Everton Verdict

While a small part of me would absolutely love Mikel Arteta to return as Everton manager, I just don’t think it would be a wise move for Everton.

Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman and Marco Silva have all been young and talented managers with a point to prove, and while the latter is in limbo for many fans, the former two certainly failed at living up to their respective burgeoning reputations.

Everton need a proven and established manager who can drag the club toward progress by the scruff of their necks. Arteta needs experience first before he should be considered.

If he is appointed after Silva, and in the near future, all I can envisage happening is that he will be hounded by fans when things start to go wrong, and I don’t want that. I want consistent and stable progress.
