# Everton fans dismiss Newcastle’s interest in Holgate

Several Everton fans have poked fun at Newcastle following [Mirror Sport’s report](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/steve-bruce-holds-newcastle-transfer-21285005?_ga=2.172325349.771101033.1578994492-1524448644.1572952515) that the Magpies are still interested in signing Mason Holgate.

[The Northern Echo first reported](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18105059.newcastle-hoping-sign-mason-holgate-lewis-gibson/) of Steve Bruce’s interest in the 23-year old versatile defender in December, with Newcastle keen on strengthening their backline in January.

Holgate started the season for Everton on the bench, but he has quickly become a regular starter at Goodison Park, [starting 13 times in the Premier League](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/297544/Show/Mason-Holgate) after having displaced Michael Keane as first choice to partner Yerry Mina.

Despite a recent report from [Football Insider claiming](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-brands-offering-big-pay-hike-as-everton-to-open-talks-on-defender-new-deal/) that Everton are set to offer Holgate a new bumper contract with a significant pay rise, [Mirror Sport claim](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/steve-bruce-holds-newcastle-transfer-21285005?_ga=2.172325349.771101033.1578994492-1524448644.1572952515) that Bruce is still keen on bringing the former Barnsley man to St James’ Park, having met with owner Mike Ashley to discuss transfer plans on Wednesday morning.

Taking to social media, a number of Everton supporters shot down Newcastle’s chances at landing the defender.

### Read Everton Verdict

I certainly wouldn’t disagree with most of what the Everton fans above have said, particularly concerning Holgate’s personal thoughts on the matter. While we don’t for sure whether Holgate would consider switching Merseyside for Tyneside, it does seem hard to imagine that he’d turn away from a regular starting role under an elite manager in order to line-up under Steve Bruce.

Holgate is certainly someone who possesses the potential to be a long-term regular for Everton, particularly given his versatility, with the fact that the defender has played as a centre-back, right-back and as a defensive midfielder ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-holgate/leistungsdaten/spieler/348623)) this season lending more credence to his value as someone who can be relied on by Carlo Ancelotti.

With Everton currently lacking depth in defence, Holgate likely wouldn’t be allowed to leave the club anyway, but even if he was granted the decision to choose I would find it difficult to believe that Newcastle currently represents the more appealing prospect.
