# Everton linked with Rakitic – Is a deal feasible?

Everton have been tangentially linked with Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, so we at Read Everton are going to unpack this latest strand on the rumour mill.

Croatia international Rakitic has fallen down the pecking order at the Nou Camp and as such has seen his name emerge on a number of clubs’ watch-lists. Inter Milan and Manchester United are both reportedly interested, but perhaps most surprisingly Everton have been included too, [with the Guardian crediting them](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/aug/01/football-transfer-rumours-everton-in-for-rakitic-coutinho-to-spurs) with ‘slight interest’.

Everton are unmistakably in the market for another midfielder this summer, having recently lost Idrissa Gueye to Paris Saint-Germain. While the club currently have James McCarthy, Morgan Schneiderlin, Tom Davies, Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph at their disposal, the Toffees are keen to find an adequate replacement to fill the gap left by Gana’s departure.

Is Rakitic that man? I doubt it. Reports suggest that the Croat would cost around £45million this summer, and while Everton have much deeper pockets now than they have had in the past few years, they don’t have an endless revenue cashflow.

At 31-years old, Rakitic doesn’t match Marcel Brands’ recruitment parameters, and having just sold a 29-year old midfielder for €30million, it doesn’t seem to make much sense spending even more money on someone with less time on their side.

Rakitic also isn’t the same type of player as Idrissa Gueye and, much like the transfer links to Mario Lemina, seems to be more of a luxury addition to a squad that isn’t in dire need of someone in that position.

Jean-Phillipe Gbamin appears relatively close to completion, presuming Everton don’t hit any unexpected speed-bumps on the way, and Rakitic just seems like a rumour so left-field that it almost doesn’t deserve any credence, because it’s hard to imagine legitamate interest from Everton’s camp.
