# Everton news: Moyes questions, Branthwaite links and Newcastle cup build-up

**It has been a busy Monday around [Everton](https://readeverton.com/), with the fallout from Saturday’s defeat at Arsenal continuing and attention beginning to turn towards Thursday night’s Carabao Cup meeting with Newcastle United.**

David Moyes’ position in Everton’s longer-term plans has provided plenty of discussion, while Jarrad Branthwaite has again been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool. Here is everything we have covered on Read Everton today.

## Is Moyes the man to take Everton forward?

Everton have greater stability, a new home at the Hill Dickinson and reasons to believe the difficult years are beginning to recede, but eventually progress off the pitch has to be matched by performances on it.

Our latest opinion piece asks whether Everton are in danger of simply existing rather than progressing. Moyes was the right appointment to steady the ship after Sean Dyche, but two wins from eight Premier League games leave legitimate questions over whether he is also the manager to take the club on to its next stage.

## Man Utd and Liverpool linked with Branthwaite

Jarrad Branthwaite’s future is back in the transfer conversation, with Manchester United reportedly retaining their interest in the Everton defender and Liverpool also linked with a possible move.

United have pursued Branthwaite before, but Everton are now in a considerably stronger position. The 24-year-old is contracted until 2030 and the latest report claims the Blues value him at around £80m, while there is no suggestion that either club has made an offer.

## Moyes faces Newcastle selection dilemma

Attention will increasingly turn towards Thursday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting with Newcastle, where Moyes has several difficult decisions to make.

Branthwaite missed the Arsenal defeat under concussion protocols, Jack Grealish was absent through illness and Vitalii Mykolenko was forced off at the Emirates. Everton’s already thin squad therefore leaves Moyes with limited room to rotate despite Thursday offering opportunities to the likes of Hayden Hackney, Tyler Dibling and Charly Alcaraz.

## Everton issues extend beyond Moyes

The debate surrounding Everton’s direction does not begin and end with the manager, with journalist Ian Croll arguing that recruitment, football strategy and leadership will ultimately be just as important.

Everton reshaped the squad during the summer but remain short of options in several positions, particularly at centre-forward. Changes to the football structure and continued uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership provide further context to the discussion over where Everton go from here.
