Everton news: Tarkowski tops Premier League chart, Moyes makes Garner admission and Saha questions TFG

James Tarkowski’s impressive start to the season, David Moyes’ assessment of James Garner and Louis Saha’s verdict on Everton‘s investment potential are among Tuesday’s main talking points.

There has also been a forthright verdict from Duncan Ferguson on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s departure, while Everton have been named among several clubs reportedly interested in free-agent striker Mauro Icardi.

Here is the latest Everton news from Tuesday.

Tarkowski leads Premier League duel chart

Tarkowski has won more duels than any other Premier League player this season, with Everton revealing that their captain has registered 57 across his opening seven appearances. The 33-year-old has played every available league minute, and his wider numbers are also impressive, including 39 clearances and 17 interceptions.

His 57 successful duels put him 12 clear of the next highest centre-backs, Liverpool’s Jeremy Jacquet and Sunderland’s Dan Ballard.

Moyes says Garner still has another level to find

Moyes believes Garner remains “a little bit off” the level he reached last season despite the midfielder’s rapid recovery from summer hernia surgery and return to the England squad. Garner played all 38 Premier League matches last season, missing only six minutes, before being named Everton’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season.

Moyes nevertheless stressed that the 25-year-old remains “hugely important” as Everton prepare to visit Arsenal on Saturday.

Saha questions timing of Everton investment process

Former Everton striker Saha believes the club represent a “great investment opportunity” but admits he is surprised by the timing of The Friedkin Group’s decision to explore new investment. TFG is considering several options, including the potential sale of a controlling interest, less than two years after completing its takeover.

Saha pointed to Everton’s new stadium, Premier League history, support and rivalry with Liverpool when explaining the club’s appeal, but described the timing of the process as “very strange”.

Ferguson says Everton should never have let Calvert-Lewin leave

Ferguson has delivered a typically emphatic assessment of Calvert-Lewin’s Everton exit, insisting the club should have found a way to keep the striker. Calvert-Lewin left when his contract expired in 2025 and has subsequently joined Leeds United, scoring five times in all competitions this season.

Ferguson, who was appointed Glentoran manager on Monday, acknowledged that he did not know what happened behind the scenes but was unequivocal about how highly he rated his former player.

Everton linked with free-agent Icardi

Everton have meanwhile been named among seven European clubs reportedly interested in former Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker Icardi. The 33-year-old is available as a free agent after leaving Galatasaray, where he scored 77 goals in 134 appearances.

TyC Sports reports that Everton are among the clubs showing interest, although there has been no formal proposal and no indication of concrete negotiations. With Thierno Barry currently Moyes’ only recognised senior centre-forward, Everton’s reported interest is notable, but there is nothing yet to suggest a deal is close.

Everton’s attention will increasingly turn towards Saturday’s trip to Arsenal, when Moyes’ side will look to respond to their first Premier League defeat of the season.
