# Everton scout prolific Irish striker as expert backs ‘very smart signing’

[Everton](https://readeverton.com/) have been credited with interest in Waterford striker Tommy Lonergan after reportedly scouting the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.

[OneFootball reported](https://onefootball.com/en/news/sunderland-leeds-and-everton-scouted-22-year-old-youth-international-striker-43598514) that Everton were among the clubs represented when Lonergan scored twice in Ireland’s 3-1 win over England Under-21s.

The 22-year-old has also impressed at club level, scoring 14 league goals for Waterford this season despite their battle towards the bottom of the League of Ireland Premier Division.

## Lonergan backed as ‘very smart signing’ for Everton

Irish football expert Ronan Calvert believes Lonergan has developed the physical attributes needed to earn another opportunity in England.

“Tommy Lonergan would be a very smart signing for Everton,” Calvert told [Betway](https://betway.com/gb/en/sports/cat/soccer).

“He was always athletic, but Lonergan is now strikingly physical, and he is using his frame to outmuscle defenders and get driven shots away or direct sweet headers past helpless keepers on a pretty regular basis.”

Lonergan has previously had spells with St Patrick’s Athletic and Fleetwood Town before establishing himself as a regular goalscorer with Waterford. Calvert believes those earlier setbacks have contributed to his development.

“He’s had to work really hard to get to this point, with some disappointments at St Patrick’s Athletic and Fleetwood Town along the way.”But the last few weeks have shown us a player who has fully arrived and is ready for the next level.”

Lonergan’s recent form has extended beyond the league. He scored against Bohemians as Waterford reached their first FAI Cup final since 2004, having also struck twice for Ireland Under-21s against England.

Everton have been linked with several forwards ahead of January, including Bayer Leverkusen’s [Christian Kofane](https://readeverton.com/everton-christian-kofane-transfer-january/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) and Rennes striker [Esteban Lepaul](https://readeverton.com/everton-esteban-lepaul-rennes-transfer-interest/).

There is no indication at this stage that Everton have officially approached Lonergan.
