# Former Everton man Robles stuns Real Madrid

Former Everton man Joel Robles put in the performance of his career against Real Madrid on Saturday.

With Barcelona losing last weekend, Madrid had the opportunity to move into the top spot in La Liga, however a Robles masterclass kept Zinedine Zidane’s side at bay.

The 29-year old left Everton in 2018 after five years at the club, following the expiry of his contract. At the time it was believed that the Toffees were keen for him to stay as Jordan Pickford’s understudy, but Joel was determined to become first-choice somewhere else.

Starting for Real Betis against Los Blancos, the Spaniard made seven saves in a Man of the Match display, all while blind in one eye after losing a contact lens during the second half.

Taking to Twitter, a number of fans recognised the goalkeeper for his stellar performance.

### Read Everton Verdict

I always liked Joel, so I’m glad to see that he is out there earning plaudits. Sure, Robles was never the greatest ‘keeper Everton have had, but he always worked hard and he proved himself on a number of occasions.

I wouldn’t begrudge Everton for signing Jordan Pickford because it was a necessary signing from a business and footballing perspective, but prior to that Joel had supplanted Tim Howard, then when Maarten Stekelenburg was signed as the American’s replacement, Joel supplanted him too.

Joel deserved to be a first-choice goalkeeper, and I’m glad to see that it is working out for him at Betis.
