# Kenny refuses to be drawn on long-term Everton future

Jonjoe Kenny has refused to be drawn on his long-term future following the end of his Schalke loan.

The 22-year old is currently on a season-long loan in the Bundesliga, and he has impressed for David Wagner’s side so far.

Given his impressive performances and the reputation he is beginning to carve for himself in Germany, many fans expect Kenny to return to Goodison Park in the summer, ready to compete for a starting spot for Everton next season.

However, Schalke have made clear that they would like Kenny to extend his stay in Gelsenkirchen beyond his loan spell, if they could tempt the defender into staying.

Talking to Sky Sports ([via Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/jonjoe-kenny-addresses-everton-future-17249974)), Kenny revealed that he is currently focused on continuing to develop as a player, and that he isn’t thinking about what the future might hold. Kenny said:

> For my personal development it was a massive chance to come here.
>
> Even off the field to learn about myself, to come and grow as a person and to become a man really. When this opportunity came up, I couldn’t really turn it down.
>
> I know the coach here from his time in the Premier League and when I spoke to him, he was top class. Straight away my mind was made up and I’m really happy I’ve joined here now.
>
> Everton’s obviously my boyhood club and I hold a massive thanks to everyone who’s helped me out there. I’ve been there since I was a young lad and I do love the club.
>
> But obviously I’m at Schalke now and I’ve got a job to do here. We’ll see what happens in the near future, but right now I’m focusing on game-by-game.

### Read Everton Verdict

In an idyllic world, Kenny would return from his loan spell and be ready to play for Everton. Both as an Evertonian and as a local lad, many fans would love to see that be the case.

However, ultimately it depends on how well he continues to develop in the coming months, as well as how Everton value him as things stand.

Should Djibril Sidibe sign permanently next summer, it would increase competition for Kenny, and he may no longer be prepared to sit on the bench. Only time will tell, but ideally, I’d like to see him stay an Everton player.
