# McCarthy suffers injury setback

James McCarthy is facing a further three weeks on the sidelines after the Irish midfielder tore a hamstring in training, [according to the Daily Mail.](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3867528/Everton-midfielder-James-McCarthy-suffers-new-injury-blow-tearing-hamstring-training.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490)

This latest setback hampers McCarthy’s already injury-stricken season, playing the full 90 minutes only once – on the opening day. He has only appeared in short cameos since he was dragged off at half-time at West Brom. McCarthy adds to the injury list along with midfield compatriot Mo Besic, who suffered an injury in pre-season, Leighton Baines, who has been affected by a recurring ankle problem and fellow Irishman Darron Gibson.

Koeman accused Ireland boss Martin O’Neill of ‘overloading’ the player after he played for Ireland through injury during the last international break. Koeman said that McCarthy playing a full 90 minutes was ‘killing’ the player and called for O’Neill to rest him.

However, when McCarthy eventually does return, he will need to do more to impress Koeman who appears not to be a fan of his. To add to McCarthy’s struggles, he finds himself further down the pecking order than ever following the arrival, and form, of Idrissa Gana Gueye.

With injury hampering McCarthy’s chances and transfer rumours rife, will McCarthy ever play for Everton again?
