# Merlin Rohl reveals how two Everton figures helped him behind the scenes

**Merlin Rohl has revealed how Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines encouraged him to take his camera into the [Everton](https://readeverton.com/) dressing room.**

Rohl’s photography book, *Life with Everton*, is released today and documents his first year at the club through pictures taken around the squad and away from football.

The 24-year-old was initially reluctant to photograph his new teammates after arriving from Freiburg, but Coleman and Baines encouraged him to start using his camera around the club.

## Coleman helped Rohl settle at Everton

“At first, I was a little bit feared of getting the camera out here,” Rohl said. “It’s a new club, and you have new players, so you don’t want to press the camera in their faces in the first weeks.”

Coleman was among those who helped Rohl become more comfortable with the idea.

“Seamus and Bainesy both pushed me into doing it,” he said.

Rohl said Coleman felt photography might help him settle at his new club, while his teammates have since become accustomed to having the camera around the dressing room.

“I feel very lucky that all the players in our dressing room are okay with my camera,” he said. “Sometimes they’re posing, and I like it when they’re not posing and are just doing some stuff, forgetting about my camera.”

Those unguarded moments have become an important part of Rohl’s work, giving him access to parts of life at Everton supporters would not normally see.

## Baines relationship goes beyond photography

Rohl has found another keen photographer in Baines, who is part of David Moyes’ coaching staff. The pair discovered that they use the same cameras and share a similar approach to photography. Their relationship has also developed on the training ground, with Rohl learning from Baines after being used at full-back.

“As a football player, I’m now going to the full-back position,” Rohl said. “I’m watching his old highlights on YouTube and working with him in the video room.

“He’s just a big inspiration for me as a person and, of course, also for the photos.”

For Rohl, it has provided an unusual link between his life as a footballer and his interest away from the game.

## Rohl’s first Everton year through his own lens

*Life with Everton* brings together Rohl’s photographs from his time on Merseyside, including images from the dressing room and behind the scenes with his teammates.

Everton have also released an extended interview with Rohl to accompany the project, in which he discusses his photography and growing attachment to the club.
