# Mirallas claims he should have been more selfish at Everton

Former Everton forward Kevin Mirallas has admitted that he would have been more successful if he was more selfish.

The Belgian winger finally left Goodison Park on a permanent basis this summer, signing for Royal Antwerp after two successive loan spells with Olympiakos and Fiorentina.

Originally a mainstay in Everton’s squad, the 32-year old fell out of favour under Ronald Koeman in the 2017/18 season, and he never regained his first-team spot under Sam Allardyce or Marco Silva.

Mirallas was a player who was always surrounded by transfer speculation while he was with the Blues, with many claiming that the Belgium international wasn’t ever committed to Everton during his time on Merseyside.

Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad ([via Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/former-everton-player-reveals-roberto-martinez-stopped-him-from-joining-atletico-madrid/)), Mirallas revealed that he had become a team player after signing for the Toffees, claiming that he would have had more impressive goalscoring figures if he had been more selfish, which could have led to a lucrative move for him. Mirallas said:

> I can look back \[at my career\] with pride, but with my qualities I could have done much better.
>
> Only with the years I became more a team player, more the assist man than the goals. Had I been more selfish, I would indeed have had better statistics and could have moved on.

### Read Everton Verdict

I definitely take umbrage with Mirallas claiming to be a team player who should have been more selfish, because selfish a word I have already associated with the forward for a number of years now.

Not just the infamous penalty against West Brom, although that was a major moment, but Mirallas’ all-round attitude on the pitch and his actions suggested that he was often out for himself.

I have always maintained and I still stand by Mirallas being one of the most naturally gifted Everton players I have seen in my lifetime watching the Blues, but his application was never consistent enough for fans to see what he could do.

I certainly don’t believe that if he had been “more selfish” he would have realised the full extent of his potential.
