# “Overrated” Neres slammed on Twitter – dodged bullet for Everton?

Everton appear to have dodged a bullet in not signing Ajax forward David Neres, if the early season reactions from several Ajax fans are to be trusted.

The Toffees were just one of many clubs interested in signing the 22-year old winger in the summer, with the forward having impressed for Ajax last season, as well as for his national side over the summer.

The Champions League semi-finalists looked likely to be in for a real fight to keep the talented Brazil international at the Johan Cruyff Arena for the new campaign, however Neres remained committed to the Amsterdam club, signing a new long-term contract earlier this month.

Everton abandoned their pursuit of the Brazilian early in the transfer window, instead turning their attention to other targets, such as Wilfried Zaha.

However, if his early season performances are anything to go by, Everton may have lucked out in that regard. Despite claiming seven points from their opening three games, a number of Ajax fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations concerning Neres’ performances.
