Oviedo set for contract extension

Bryan Oviedo is set to receive a contract extension at Everton.

Roberto Martinez is reportedly looking to trigger a clause in his contract which will give him a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Goodison Park until the summer of 2017.

The Costa Rican international is a ‘valuable’ member of the squad according to Martinez, with the Everton manager seeing Oviedo as an ‘understudy’ for Leighton Baines.

The full-back has made 35 appearances for the Blues during his time on Merseyside and has scored two goals, most notably the winner at Old Trafford which saw Everton away to Manchester United for the first time on over two decades.

The former Copenhagen star started for Everton in their 3-0 win against Newcastle and played the full 90 minutes as his side won at home in the league for the first time since November.

After the much-needed victory, Oviedo lavished praise on Ross Barkley and hailed his impact in the game:

He’s a very important player for us and we have some very good players.

Ross is in a very good moment for him and that helps the team. He is an amazing, incredible player and I’m so happy to play with him.

When he plays, he helps the team. If he continues like this, he will become one of the best players in the Premier League. I really believe that.

matchday.
