# Boyland reveals potential twist in David Moyes’ Everton future

**David Moyes’ future at [Everton](https://readeverton.com/) could ultimately be decided by the club’s next owners, according to [The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7689518/2026/10/16/everton-tfg-ownership-sale-explainer/).**

Moyes is out of contract at the end of the season, with Everton having agreed during the summer to delay talks over his future until the transfer window had closed. However, The Friedkin Group’s decision to explore the sale of a controlling interest has complicated the situation.

Boyland reports that there is a belief among senior figures at Everton that Moyes is doing a good job, but his future is now expected to be resolved by new owners unless the takeover process takes longer than anticipated.

The 63-year-old has guided Everton to an unbeaten start in the Premier League, with the club fifth after six matches despite operating with a relatively small squad.

## Moyes decision could be left to new owners

Moyes returned for a second spell as Everton manager in January 2025 and helped steer the club away from relegation trouble before overseeing their move to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

His longer-term position is now one of several issues facing Everton after TFG confirmed that Moelis & Company had been instructed to explore investment or the sale of a controlling interest.

There is no suggestion that Moyes is under immediate pressure. Boyland’s reporting instead points to the timing of any decision being affected by the ownership process, with a new controlling owner potentially inheriting the responsibility of determining the manager’s future.

The uncertainty could also affect Everton’s plans away from the pitch. Boyland reports that the club have been trying to purchase Nelson Dock, the land immediately adjacent to Hill Dickinson Stadium, but talks have progressed slowly. There is now a feeling that the matter may have to be taken forward by TFG’s successor.

Everton currently lease Nelson Dock beyond Euro 2028, when Hill Dickinson Stadium is due to host five matches.

The Athletic reports that a planned expansion of Finch Farm, along with improvements to the club’s training facilities, could similarly become an issue for Everton’s next owners to address.
