# Pundit Reactions: Garth Crooks Issues Sigurdsson Claim

BBC Pundit Garth Crooks has boldly claimed that Gylfi Sigurdsson is ‘arguably Everton’s player of the season’ in the wake of Everton’s [2-2 stalemate](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56684992) against Spurs.

[Discussing his choices](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56849170)for the overall team of the week following the conclusion of the latest round of Premier League fixtures, Crooks looked back on Sigurdsson’s latest performance.

Praising his all-round centrality to Everton this season, Crooks claimed:

> “The match wasn’t a classic but the finishing was. Two outstanding finishes from Gylfi Sigurdsson and the same from Harry Kane really made the game worth watching.

> “Sigurdsson has made my TOTW on a number of occasions and has arguably been Everton’s player of the season.

> “I certainly can’t remember when I’ve seen him play better. He was impressive at Swansea, where he made his name, struggled at Spurs but really matured under Carlo Ancelotti.

> “He strikes a beautiful ball and was a thorn in Tottenham’s side all evening. Sigurdsson’s has really found himself at Everton”.

Few would contest that the Iceland international has stepped up to the mantle of Everton’s playmaking role this season.

He has scored[6 goals and assisted](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gylfi-sigurdsson/profil/spieler/90466) a further 4 in the Premier League, keeping Everton afloat as they keep an eye on the European places in the table.

Signed for [almost £45 million,](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gylfi-sigurdsson/profil/spieler/90466)Everton’s willingness to spend such a gargantuan fee on the dynamo is a testament to their belief in the player – but Crooks’ claim that he is the Toffees’ star of the season is more contestable.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one name that springs to mind: the home-grown hitman is Everton’s [top scorer in the league](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/everton/top-scorers) and has been the bedrock of Carlo Ancelotti’s offensive plans.

Sigurdsson’s contributions should not be discounted, but claiming he deserves recognition ahead of others is a step too bold.
