# Rodwell set for shock move to Italian giants Roma

Former Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell is set to undergo a shock medical with Serie A giants Roma today ahead of joining the club on a free transfer, [according to Sky Sports News.](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11861/11844452/jack-rodwell-set-for-roma-medical-ahead-of-free-transfer).

The 28-year old was released by Blackburn Rovers in June after his career took a severe nosedive, and he hasn’t played for anyone since then.

The former England international left the Toffees in 2012 for £12million, a relatively significant fee for the club at the time, playing just 16 Premier League games for Manchester City before signing for Sunderland two years later.

After four years with the Black Cats, and having barely featured in the final two years of his time on Wearside, Rodwell’s contract at the Stadium of Light was terminated, where he then spent a season with Rovers in the Championship.

Greek side Panathinaikos were heavily linked with a move for Rodwell this summer, but it appears as though Roma have won the race for his signature, with the Giallorossi experiencing somewhat of a midfield crisis.

Paulo Fonseca’s injury-plagued side are currently without Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Amadou Diawara, while centre-back Gianluca Mancini was forced to play in midfield against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Europa League on Thursday night, where Rodwell was in attendance.

If Rodwell does sign for Roma, he will join former Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Vertout as the only other fit central midfield option at the Stadio Olimpico.

### Read Everton Verdict

This couldn’t be a more bizarre situation, and fair play to Jack Rodwell’s agent, because he/she has played a blinder here.

I always felt sorry to see Jack’s career so drastically collapse because at one time he was destined to be both Everton and England’s next best thing, a similar burden that Ross Barkley carried during his first few years at the club.

I very much doubt Rodwell will feature often if he does sign, particularly when other options return to fitness, but I do hope that he does well when given the opportunity.
