# Rojo closes on loan exit – will Everton turn attention back to Zouma?

Marcos Rojo looks set to leave Manchester United before the transfer window closes, with Fenerbahce closing in.

The former Everton transfer target came close to signing for the Toffees on Deadline Day, only for a deal to fall through when Manchester United’s board pulled the plug, citing the reason as they didn’t want to sell to a top four rival.

Other reports claim that it came down to both clubs wanting a different deal, with United only wanting to sell while Everton were set on a loan deal.

Regardless, the Argentine was reportedly left ‘furious’ when his move didn’t come through, but now it appears as though he has another way out of Old Trafford this month.

According to A Spor ([via Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/club-closing-manchester-united-defender-close-securing-old-trafford-exit/)), Fenerbahce’s sporting director Damien Comolli has reached an agreement with United for a loan transfer for Rojo. Journalist Ali Baransel states that Rojo is “very close” to joining the Super Lig side until the end of the season.

It is unclear whether Everton had plans to return with another attempt to bring Rojo to Goodison Park in January, having only three senior centre-backs in the squad currently after failing to secure a replacement for Kurt Zouma, but the 29-year old appears to no longer be an option worth pursuing.

This seems like the perfect deal for all parties involved. Manchester United won’t have to worry about paying all of Rojo’s wages at least, the player will get the opportunity to play regular football and Everton won’t be saddled with more United cast-offs.

I’ve been very clear in my opposition to the signing of Rojo from the start. I’m not the biggest fan of the Argentine and I don’t think the deal being proposed was worth it from Everton’s perspective. Now it leaves the club free to pursue alternative targets in January, which is ideal.

Quite who those targets will be, I’m not sure. Although I’m sure that giving the failings this summer, Marcel Brands will be much quicker to prepare business in that area during the winter window.
