# Silva and Brands have held talks about Virginia re-call

Marco Silva, Marcel Brands and David Unsworth have held talks about bringing Joao Virginia back from his loan spell in January.

The Portugal youth international goalkeeper signed for Reading on a season-long loan in the summer, but his time at the Madejski has not gone well for the starlet.

A series of mistakes early on in the season saw the 20-year old lose his place in the starting line-up under manager Jose Gomes, and following Mark Bowen’s appointment to replace the sacked Gomes, Virginia has still struggled for minutes.

Seen as a major talent at Finch Farm, Everton’s management would have hoped for a better start to senior football for the former Arsenal youngster, with Virginia managing just three appearances in the Championship for the Royals.

[It was reported a few weeks ago](https://readeverton.com/2019/11/15/everton-have-small-window-to-re-call-virginia-in-january/) that Everton have a small window of time where they can re-call Virginia in January, and [according to the Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/marco-silva-marcel-brands-hold-17311605), Silva, Brands and Unsworth have held talks about whether to do so.

Talking to the Echo, Unsworth confirmed that conversations have been held about bringing the shot-stopper back to Finch Farm, saying:

> Marcel and I and Marco have spoken.
>
> He’s having a tough time at the moment and we have discussed it. I’m not really sure the final decision on what is going to happen but all I know is that he’s an absolute top, top young goalkeeper.
>
> He’s had a bad loan, it happens. Look what happened to Beni \[Baningime\] last year. We all know Beni’s qualities. It can happen. I’m sure he will be a better person for it when he comes back, whenever he comes back.
>
> You get good loans, you get bad loans and as much as it’s been not a great and productive loan in terms of him playing I’m sure he will have learned a lot about himself.
>
> It will stand him in good stead. He’s a kid in terms of goalkeeping and any experience will help him in the future.

I think that it can only be a positive move for Virginia to return to Finch Farm in January, because at this stage of his career, he needs minutes.

The young goalkeeper will be learning about first-team football for sure, but he could learn so much more if he was playing week in, week out.

Whether Unsworth decides to keep him with the Under-23s for the remainder of the season or the club look to find him a new loan club, he needs to be brought back from Reading, because that just isn’t working.
