# Silva confident that Holgate can perform if called upon

Marco Silva is confident that Mason Holgate can rise to the occasion if called upon this weekend.

The Everton boss confirmed ahead of the club’s Premier League clash with Brighton on Saturday that Yerry Mina is a major doubt, meaning Holgate could quite likely deputise for the Colombian.

The 23-year old has only started two games this season, both in the Carabao Cup, while his Premier League appearances have been restricted to short cameos.

Holgate is a divisive figure among the Everton fan base, with many supporters not overly keen on the former Barnsley man’s ability being up to scratch.

Silva however is confident that Holgate has more than enough quality to fill in for Mina, if he is called upon to face the Seagulls.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, [Silva said](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11671/11843945/marco-silva-pleased-with-everton-selection-headache-for-brighton) of Holgate:

> He’s ready, he’s prepared. He shows to me every single day that he’s working hard to achieve and to get his chance.
>
> I’m 100 per cent sure if he has the chance he will be ready to perform at his level, because we believe in him.

If Holgate is chosen to play on Saturday, it will be the perfect time for him to prove his worth to Marco Silva both as a rotation option for the long-term and a capable starter for the short-term.

Holgate is a talented ball playing centre-back, but his sometimes short term and rashness can cost him, and that is something he must iron out of his game if he wants more regular minutes.

The versatile defender has all of the makings of a solid squad player for the Toffees, but he needs to really show that against Brighton.
