# Silva’s “be Everton” comment doesn’t land with Toffees fans

It isn’t uncommon for someone to say something with well-meaning only for it to be translated and interpreted in an altogether different way.

Marco Silva has seemingly fallen victim to this scenario when speaking prior to Everton’s clash against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening. The Toffees coach said:

> We need to forget about feeling nervous. What we should be, is to go there and be Everton Football Club.

While Silva of course meant something much more positive with his “be Everton” statement, in modern times that expression has taken on a different meaning completely.

Nowadays, to “do an Everton” or “be Everton” is to fail at something when all the chips are stacked in Everton’s favour, usually via the way of self-sabotage or capitulation.

With this in mind, several Everton fans took to Twitter to either mock or question Silva’s choice of words, despite the well-meaning behind them.
