Everton are a worldwide club, with a world-class history. Nine English titles and five FA Cups can say that the club should not be considered small, yet recent history will say that Everton are not a big club either. So why do so many Americans support the club?
The majority will state that they were chosen to support Everton just like the fans in England. Everton chose me to support them. The following in the States will only grow with the television deal with American media outlet NBC (mostly through NBCSN). Now more than ever we can watch our club, ‘The American Peoples’ Club’, on live television.
Another reason why so many Americans are Everton supporters is because of the American players that have played for the club. Currently, Tim Howard is the only American on the squad, yet 2010 World Cup hero Landon Donovan had two loan spells at the club and to this day he mentions Everton in his Twitter bio. Countryman Brian McBride had a loan spell at Everton scoring 4 goals in 8 games played, while Joe-Max Moore also had success early on in his Everton career.
These players have certainly had an influence for Americans supporting Everton not only in the past and present, but also into the future. Certainly there will be a time when no American will play for Everton but the clubs popularity will not diminish in the United States.
EvertonUSA is the national supporters group for Everton in America. The group has their own website ‘evertonusa.net’ and has over 17,ooo Twitter followers. People create local chapters for viewing parties and other events for Evertonians to meet and discuss all things Everton. EvertonUSA also have official Everton merchandise available for purchase.
Everton has a strong influence in America and it will not go away anytime soon.
