# Virals: Everton Confirm Double Transfer Swoop

[Everton](https://readeverton.com/2021/07/21/virals-everton-to-battle-for-jeremie-boga/) have taken to social media to confirm a double swoop for Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic who have penned permanent deals with the Blues.

The duo kick off transfer dealings under Rafa Benitez’ new reign at the club as he continues to rebuild his new-look Toffees squad in his image.

Free agent Townsend, a 13-cap England international, has penned a two-year deal with the club keeping him in Everton colours until 2023.

His most recently drew a five-year association with fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace to a close, where he spent a period of time playing under the tutelage of ex-Toffees manager Sam Allardyce.

He is no stranger to Benitez and his methods either; Townsend spent a handful of months working with the Spanish tactician at Newcastle before the Magpies’ untimely relegation to the Championship.

He has promised a tenacious array of displays in an Everton shirt and explained how he suits a target-man striker in the club’s system:

> “My strengths are that I can cross a ball with my left or right foot, get balls into the box. I like to score a goal or two,” [said Townsend as he spoke to the club.](https://www.evertonfc.com/news/2193729/townsend-joins-everton)

> “I work hard off the ball, too, which is something I got better at with Rafa.

> “My job now is to prove I’m good enough to be an important part of this football club and that’s what I’m working hard in training and in games – and whenever I get the opportunity in pre-season – to prove I’m good enough to be an important player here. That’s what drives me.”

Begovic brings a wealth of Premier League experience accumulated with the likes of Stoke City, Chelsea and Bournemouth to the club and is believed to have[joined on a free transfer,](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1416347038896230400) despite having a year left to run on his previous deal at Bournemouth.

The 34-year-old has signed an initial 12-month deal.

For early-stage business, Everton have completed affordable deals for essential roles that needed filling.

With Robin Olsen having departed, Begovic is a cost-effective solution to challenge Jordan Pickford in training and offer cover for the shot-stopper.

Equally, Townsend’s work rate and lack of a price tag makes him a relatively risk-free depth signing to reinforce the club’s right flank.

His comments indicate an acceptance that he is not expected to be a star for the club, and will instead be given the chance to come in and compete for places.
