# Why Everton fans shouldn’t get Koulibaly hopes up

Everton are keeping tabs on Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly’s situation, according to [Gazzetta dello Sport](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Serie-A/Napoli/27-02-2020/koulibaly-compra-casa-parigi-psg-chiama-ma-de-laurentiis-spera-un-asta-3601280996543.shtml?cmpid=shortener_0539900bfl).

The Toffees have been linked with the Senegal sentinel in the past, with [reports citing the club’s interest](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/everton-boss-carlo-ancelotti-working-21160379) emerging almost immediately after Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment as Everton manager.

Now [Gazzetta](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Serie-A/Napoli/27-02-2020/koulibaly-compra-casa-parigi-psg-chiama-ma-de-laurentiis-spera-un-asta-3601280996543.shtml?cmpid=shortener_0539900bfl) (as translated by [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/everton-remain-vigilant-serie-stars-situation-club-bidding-war-make-owner-happy/)) claim that Everton are keeping a watchful eye on his situation, with some poor performances seemingly having led to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis lowering his transfer demands.

[Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/everton-remain-vigilant-serie-stars-situation-club-bidding-war-make-owner-happy/)‘ report claims that Manchester United had a €100million offer rejected last year, although the 28-year would likely cost less now, with form and injuries bringing his valuation down.

It is no secret that we will likely attempt to sign a centre-back in the summer, with the club currently only possessing three senior options, but a move for Koulibaly doesn’t sit quite right with me.

We had previously made an offer of around £60million for Koulibaly in 2016, an offer which De Laurentiis promptly turned down, and since then the centre-back has only gotten better and become more noticeable in world football.

Should the Blues enter a bidding war, it could become a fruitless task, with us probably being unlable to keep up with the big spenders in the transfer market after announcing [record financial losses](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7853783/Everton-suffer-record-financial-losses-limiting-Carlo-Ancelottis-spending-sparking-clear-out.html) in January.

If we do want to make a big splash in the transfer market, and I’m not entirely sure that we’re in the position to do that, then it would be better to see the club pursue a big-money midfielder or wide player, someone who can improve the club’s creative and goal return.
