Following the injury to Leighton Baines’ ankle last week, Roberto Martinez will delve into the transfer market again before the window shuts, writes Sami Mokbel of the Mail Online.
The extent of the injury is not yet known, so the Everton manager wants to seal a loan deal for Alexander Buttner, formerly of Manchester United.
Buttner now plays for Dynamo Moscow, where he has to compete with Yuri Zhirkov for the left-back spot. He is a tenacious, lively character who loves to get down the wing and either go for goal himself or whip a cross in for his team-mates – something which Baines normally brings to the side.
He is certainly faster than Baines and he used his pace well in his time at United, despite only making 14 starts as Patrice Evra’s understudy. A strong character, he loves a tackle and plays every game as if it’s his last – he’d make a very good temporary solution whilst Baines regains fitness.
It was young Brendan Galloway who filled in for Baines at left-back against Watford last week but Buttner would add some more experience in the role, as he has played in the Champions League for United – including a very impressive game against Bayern Munich in the absence of an injured Evra.
