Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that he will keep his eye open for transfers as the deadline approaches but admits ‘it’s not a period where we have to find solutions.’
Coming off the back of being knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Manchester City the Blues and Catalonian Martinez have come under scrutiny. 18 wins in their last 61 matches, as well as no win in the Premier League since their last-minute win over Newcastle United on boxing day, has meant that Evertonians have grown frustrated with the lack of positive results.
Roberto Martinez now has the chance to strengthen his squad as the Monday deadline approaches but has admitted that he won’t buy for the sake of it. Speaking to the clubs official site, Martinez explained:
We’ll keep our options open until the deadline, We know we have to use the transfer window in our favour if we can, but it’s not a period where we have to find solutions.
The squad is large enough and talented enough to find solutions internally but we always treat the window as an opportunity and we’ll continue to do that.
The Catalonian also spoke out about his squad and how he hopes to turn them into a team competing for Champions League football on a regular basis, he said:
In my eyes, we have one of the most competitive squads in the league, we have four or five of the best young talents in European football. I think where we are now is a step forward in our journey to becoming a winning team. I know, with a little bit of time, this team can become a really special one.
We have an overall target where we want to get into the top four and compete consistently against the top teams. It won’t happen overnight and we have to learn how to compete in those matches. I feel we’re right in the middle of that process.
With fans beginning to voice their opinion through social media and several fans voicing their opinion after the Swansea game, Roberto Martinez spoke briefly to reassure fans, he explained:
I understand the expectations and I understand what it takes to be a team at Everton with the history and heritage. I think we’re getting very close to getting back to the glory years but it’s not going to be easy or pain-free.
Everton face Carlisle on Sunday in their FA Cup Fourth round clash and fans will be expecting to see their team back to winning ways against lower league opposition.
