Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has found himself sitting on the Old Trafford substitute bench in recent weeks with Jose Mourinho opting to use Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front.
When the England captain is benched, it is obviously a national story and it’s led to questions being asked about the 31-year-old’s future at Man United.
There is nothing to suggest that Rooney will be leaving United in the future but if he does become available, Everton manager Ronald Koeman has admitted that he’d be interested in bringing him back to Merseyside.
He said:
If Wayne Rooney ever becomes an option for Everton, I would be very pleased.
Rooney started his professional career with his boyhood Everton, making his Blues debut in 2002. He was sold to United two years later and has gone on to win every club trophy during his career there.
If he was to leave United, it makes sense for him to join Everton as it’d allow him to stay in the North West area and it would probably mean a lot to him in a sentimental way too.
However, Rooney’s reported £300,000-a-week wage would be too much for Everton to pay, so he’d have to accept a much-reduced salary if he made the switch.
