Everton manager, Ronald Koeman has been listed as the new favourite to get the sack by bookmakers if his team don’t arrest our slide that has seen the Dutchman come under increased scrutiny. The former Southampton manager oversaw a transfer window in which the Merseysiders spent close to £150m on new players including the likes of Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez, Michael Keane, Vlasic, Jordan Pickford and others chief of which Gylfi Sigurdsson and his ankle brace arrived at the club from Swansea in a club record deal of £45m.
Sigurdsson was one of the best players in the league last season, but has struggled to impose himself at his new club, having arrived late in the transfer window and being played out of position. Everton legend, Peter Reid who was part of the club’s glorious era in the mid 1980s has advised the manager about where to play the Iceland international, who helped his country qualify for the World Cup in the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers just last week. The club also failed to replace Romelu Lukaku who has since gone on to do big things at Manchester United.
Majority of pundits, fans and lovers of the game believe Sigurdsson should be played in a central role instead of being played out wide, an assertion Reid agrees with wholeheartedly. Reid was quoted by saying in the Independent, “I don’t think that at Swansea, Sigurdsson played left side,” “He was at the hub and, without being too critical of Mr Koeman, if I am buying a player for £45m, I want him to play in his position.” he added.
Everton have struggled badly all season, and are in 16th position on the table. Sigurdsson has struggled given that Koeman bought two number 10s in the shape of Davy Klaasen and Wayne Rooney. Sigurdsson is a classy attacking midfielder known for his setpiece prowess, creativity and finishing. He scored 9 times in the Premier League last season and created a further 13 as he helped the Swans stave off relegation.
